What Are Common Types of Sports and Recreational Injuries?

Sports injuries may come on gradually or suddenly. They are often associated with postural imbalances (inflexibility, weakness), pain, tenderness, swelling, instability, and clicking or popping sensations. And while almost any type of injury can occur in any type of sport, certain injuries are more common in certain kinds of athletic activities. Here are some injuries we frequently see by sport:

  • Volleyball: runner's knee or patellofemoral pain syndrome, shin splints, plantar fasciitis
  • Softball and baseball: rotator cuff strains, biceps tendonitis
  • Football: ligament sprains (especially in the knee), whiplash, and joint dislocations
  • Gymnastics: Achilles tendonitis, iliotibial band syndrome
  • Tennis: tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Golf: golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)
  • Gardening: back pain, knee pain, sciatica, and carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Wrestling: disc herniation or bulge, spinal joint subluxation

What Are The Risk Factors for Sports Injury?

You may be new to a sport or you could have years of experience under your belt, however, no matter what your activity or experience, you are always dealing with at least some risk for a sports-related injury. Common risk factors which may increase your likelihood of getting hurt during exercise or sport include poor technique and body mechanics, ill-fitting equipment, poor running surface, acute sports injury, over-training, and inadequate rest, recovery, hydration, and nutrition.

How Can Chiropractic Care Benefit Athletes?

Chiropractic treatment can naturally resolve sports injury by alleviating symptoms (including pain, swelling, scar tissue, and weakness) and by addressing the underlying factors contributing to symptoms. Common services for athletes include adjustments, corrective exercises, massage,  electrical stimulation, and whole fool supplements.  We assess the whole body, not just the injury.

Even if you don't have an injury, consulting with a chiropractor is still wise. A sports physical and functional assessment allows our Batavia chiropractor to assess your range of motion, strength, body mechanics, and other physical and lifestyle factors which may put you at risk for injury or hold you back from your true athletic potential.
